چکیده

We examine the Fisher–Tully cz < 1000 km s galaxy sample to determine whether it is a complete and representative sample of all galaxy types, including low surface brightness populations, as has been recently claimed. We find that the sample is progressively more incomplete for galaxies with (1) smaller physical diameters at a fixed isophote and (2) lower HI masses. This is likely to lead to a significant undercounting of nearby gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies. However, through comparisons to other samples we can understand how the nearby galaxy counts need to be corrected, and we see some indications of environmental effects that probably result from the local high density of galaxies. Estimation of the Space Density of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

The space density of low surface brightness and tiny gas-rich dwarf galaxies are estimated for two recent catalogs: The Arecibo Survey of Northern Dwarf and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (Schneider, Thuan, Magri & Wadiak 1990) and The Catalog of Low Surface Brightness Galaxy, List II (Schombert, Bothun, Schneider & McGaugh 1992). The goals are (1) to evaluate the additions to the completeness...

Gas-rich LSB Galaxies – Progenitors of Blue Compact Dwarfs?

We analyze deep CCD images of nearby Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies in an attempt to understand the nature of the progenitors which are hosting the current burst of star formation. In particular, we ask whether BCDs are hosted by normal or low-surface-brightness dI galaxies. We conclude that BCDs are in fact hosted by gas-rich galaxies which populate the extreme high-central-mass-density end...

Using the refurbished 305m Arecibo Gregorian Telescope, we detected 43 low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies from the catalog of O'Neil, Bothun, & Cornell (1997a). The detected galaxies range from 22.0 mag arcsec −2 ≤ µ B (0) ≤ 25.0 mag arcsec −2 , with colors ranging from the blue through the first detection of a very red LSB galaxies (B−V = −0.7 to 1.7). The M HI /L B of these galaxies ranges...

The HI Content and Extent of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies – Could LSB Galaxies be Responsible for Damped Ly - α Absorption ?

Low surface brightness galaxies, those galaxies with a central surface brightness at least one magnitude fainter than the night sky, are often not included in discussions of extragalactic gas at z < 0.1. In this paper we review many of the properties of low surface brightness galaxies, including recent studies which indicate low surface brightness systems may contribute far more to the local HI...

Star formation and the interstellar medium in low surface brightness galaxies III. Why they are blue, thin and poor in molecular gas

We present N -body simulations of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies and their Interstellar Medium to investigate the cause for their low star formation rates (SFR). Due to their massive halos, stellar disks of LSB galaxies are very stable and thin. Lack of dust makes the projected edge-on surface brightness of LSB galaxies comparable to the projected edge-on surface brightness of dust-rich ...
